John Muir College - Celebrating the Independent Spirit

Academic Advising

Muir’s academic advisors are committed to helping you make the most of your education and explore options to achieve your personal, educational, and professional goals. We meet with students one-on-one at all levels, freshman to senior, concerning general education and graduation requirements; prerequisites for all majors; course selection appropriate for students’ abilities, interests, and goals; and compliance with academic regulations. Advisors also consult on the selection of majors and minors (including the possibility of double majors); the Muir Special Project (MSP) major; education abroad; honors programs; the Dartmouth Exchange program; adding and dropping classes; petitions, transferability of summer school courses and courses from other colleges and universities; and academic difficulty and probation.

Muir Academic Advisors are available to work with students in the following ways:

Walk-In's / Express 15's

Walk-In's / Express 15's are 15-minute walk-in sessions to help with simple questions such as:

- Changing your current quarter classes.
- Picking classes for next quarter.
- Deciding whether or not to drop a class.

Walk-In's / Express 15's are offered Fridays throughout the quarter and daily during enrollment weeks. See our complete schedule below.

Appointments

Appointments are 30-minute sessions to address more involved questions, such as:

- Developing a long-term academic plan.
- Discussing options for majors or double majors.
- Updating and reviewing your degree audit.

Appointments start the second week of every quarter and must be scheduled at least one day in advance.

The Virtual Advising Center (VAC)

Current students can submit a brief question 24/7 through the Virtual Advising Center. An advisor will respond to you within 2 working days (and often sooner).

Finish-In-Four

Finish-in-Four sample guides are available as examples of how to complete your major and graduation requirements in 4 years.
