  • engaging new and continuing Muir students in substantive personalized academic advising
  • supporting students as they explore diverse interests and develop into thoughtful self-directed adults through their senior year to commencement.
  • assisting new and continuing students to make informed decisions in order to formulate sound educational plans based on their interests, abilities, unique talents, and life goals
  • enhancing students’ academic experience, satisfaction, and persistence to graduate in a timely manner.

Effective college advising is a major factor in disseminating a broad range of academic information about the college and university regarding

  1. courses to satisfy requirements for general education and graduation
  2. deciding upon majors, and perhaps an optional minor as well as electives
  3. educational enrichment opportunities.

Specifically, advisors provide information in support of

  • Muir’s general education framework of four different areas of learning to assure a broad-based liberal arts education;
  • Sequence-based general education requirements and analytical writing courses to assure depth of knowledge;
  • High degree of freedom to choose sequences within areas of learning which is intended to make students' selection of courses matter more to them;
  • Personalized advising from Muir’s academic advisors to support informed decision-making;
  • Flexible structure, allowing for academic exploration;
  • Opportunities for academic enrichment, including the Dartmouth Exchange Program, Education Abroad Program, UCDC Program, Internships, etc.
  • Optional Muir-based interdisciplinary minors such as: Environmental Studies, Film Studies, and Critical Gender Studies.
