Students in good academic standing may request to pursue a double major. Normally students have 90-135 units at the time they file a petition for a double major. One of the criteria for double majors is that the majors must be completed within 240 total quarter-units, or less than fifteen quarters at UCSD. Although lower-division prerequisites may overlap, at least ten upper-division courses (40 units) must be unique to each major. Double majors within the same department, or consisting of a departmental and an interdisciplinary major associated with the same department, are, with very few exceptions, unacceptable.
Double major petition forms are available at the Academic Advising Office. You must obtain approval first from the faculty adviser and chairperson from each department, and then from the Muir College Advising Office. You must notify the above offices whenever a revision is made on your petition.
