Individual Tutoring
Tutoring for Spring Quarter 2008 has begun! Tutoring starts Week 2 and continues through Week 10. Karen Van Ness, Lila Sharif, and Jason Farr are the tutors for this quarter.
All Muir Writing students can sign up for free individual tutoring in the Muir Writing Office, H&SS 2436. Karen Van Ness, a current MCWP 50 instructor, and Lisa Thomas, a current MCWP 40 instructor, will be the MCWP tutors for Winter Quarter 2008. Tutoring sign up sheets are generally posted on the Thursday or Friday prior to the week of tutoring.
TUTORING GUIDELINES
-You must cancel your appointment if you cannot make it. There are a limited number of appointments available, and by not showing up you may prevent another student from getting help. If you need to cancel, phone the writing program office (858-534-2522) 24 hours in advance of your scheduled appointment. If you do not phone the office and fail to show up for your appointment, your instructor will be notified and your missed appointment will count as an ABSENCE from class. If you miss a second appointment, you will lose your tutoring privileges for the rest of the quarter.
-You must request a Tutor Referral Form from your instructor.
- To make an appointment, go to the Muir Writing Program office (HSS 2346) for available days & times. Sign up sheets are posted on Thursdays for the following week.
- Students may sign up for ONLY ONE TUTORIAL A WEEK. Space is limited! Half-hour appointments are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
-Be prepared! Bring your assignment with you, along with the text you have been assigned. It is also helpful to bring any notes you have taken and paper and pencil/pen so that you may take additional notes during your appointment.
-Be sure to bring a draft of your paper. If your instructor has commented on your paper, be sure to bring that copy to your tutorial.
-Although your instructor should note on the referral form specific areas in which you need help, you should also bring with you any questions you may have. As tutorial sessions are only 30 minutes, it may be impossible for the tutor to address every aspect of your paper; therefore, narrowing down 1-3 key areas on which you need help or have questions, will focus your tutorial and make it more productive.
-Give the tutor enough time to help you; make an appointment several days BEFORE the paper is due.
