ACADEMIC ADVISING

Orientation: An invitation post card to the Fall Orientation Program will be mailed in mid May. This post card will direct you to separate reservation websites for incoming freshmen (http://newstudent.ucsd.edu) and parents/family members (http://newparent.ucsd.edu) so that you may reserve space in one of the Orientation sessions held this summer.

Muir College General Education: The better you understand our General Education requirements, the better prepared you will be! Some Community College courses can be used towards meeting these requirements.

Transferable Community College Courses: If you have taken coursework at a California Community College or plan to this summer, the ASSIST website will help you find which courses is UC-transferable, and can be applied towards Muir General Education or major requirements.

Transcripts and AP Scores: Please make sure that you have all of your AP scores and an official transcript from any community college you attend sent to: UCSD Admissions, 9500 Gilman Drive, La Jolla, CA 92093-0021-A.

AP and IB Score Charts: Use the AP chart and/or the IB chart to identify the units and UCSD course credit you will receive for certain passing scores on Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) exams that you took in high school.

Placement Tests: These tests are very important to your ability to enroll in the appropriate level course. Math and Writing are especially crucial. If you have questions about the Math Placement Exam, dates and other information can be found here - http://testing.ucsd.edu/.

Information about the Analytical Writing Placement Exam is available online. Please take this test in May, if at all possible. A Chemistry online placement exam is also available and recommended if you plan to take General Chemistry at UCSD. This is especially important for students who are placed into Basic Chemistry (CHEM 4) at UCSD, since that course is only offered in Fall Quarter. Online language placement exams are required for students who plan to take French, German, Italian, or Spanish. Students, who have passing AP or IB scores for Chemistry or any of these languages, do not need to take the exams.

Academic Major Course Requirements: If you have declared a major, use this alphabetical index to find your department's homepage and spend some time researching the coursework required.

Finish-in-Four Quarter by Quarter Guides: Use these guides to explore the various majors offered by UCSD and/or to see a sample quarter-by-quarter progression for taking classes required by a major you have chosen. You will notice that most 4-year plans suggest that students spend the majority of their first year, in particular the Fall quarter, completing GE and lower division major requirements. GE courses are easily found at community colleges and lower division major courses are often offered every quarter or at least twice a year at UCSD.
