Housing at Muir
Most first-year resident students at Muir live in either Tioga or Tenaya Halls, and upperclass students live in either the Tamarack or Tuolumne Apartments. These residences are divided into small communities called houses, each consisting of approximately 80 to 150 students. There are a total of thirteen houses at Muir, five in Tioga, four in Tenaya, and two in each of the apartment complexes, Tuolumne and Tamarack. Houses in Tioga and Tenaya are further divided into suites composed of a group of single, double, and triple rooms. Each house has two House Advisors (HAs) who are upperclass students and are committed to develop each house into a fun and productive community. We encourage every resident to be an integral part of his or her community and offer a wide variety of ways to become involved in residential life and college programs, activities and organizations.
Already thinking about your room assignment? Hold off worrying about that for just a little while longer! By the beginning of June, you will have received your housing contract on-line from the UCSD Central Housing Office. You will be required to return your housing contract, signed and with a $650 prepayment, back to the Central Housing Office on-line no later than the end of June. (The exact deadline date is on the contract.)
We will be making room and roommate assignments from the information you give us during Orientation and from the Personal History Form you return on-line with your housing contract. Preferences for particular housing spaces will be based on the date of your housing application which was due in early May. For housing this fall and to maintain your housing guarantee, your housing contract must be returned with your prepayment by the deadline date.
If you are attending Orientation in June, we will have the opportunity to talk about the room and roommate assignment process. While we cannot guarantee any particular room or roommate assignment, we work very hard to satisfy and accommodate your needs and your requests. You can let us know your preferences on the personal history form, which comes with your housing contract, at Orientation, or by emailing email@example.com no later than mid-July. Any roommate request must be mutual. All students in these requests must be registered as Muir College students, as we cannot house students from other Colleges. We make room assignments in August and you will be notified of your room assignment on-line by the end of August.
Should you need a particular housing accommodation based on a medical condition, please contact the Office of Students with Disabilities at 858.534.4382 as quickly as possible, so we have time to prepare your accommodation for your arrival on campus in the fall.
You will receive notification of your room and roommate assignment by email to your UCSD email address at the end of August. Please feel free to call the Muir Residential Life Office at 858-534-4200 with any questions you may have. However, please do not call about room changes. Please see us in the Muir Residential Life Office with those questions after the first day of classes. Room changes will not be negotiated until after the start of classes.
In addition to basic furniture, each room is generally equipped with one telephone outlet (except for Tamarack) and an outlet box for cable TV. Each resident is also provided with a computer cable data modem box for direct connection to the university's computer network.
Three of our houses are theme houses -- Cultural, Wellness and Wilderness Houses. While residents in these houses participate in the same activities as residents of the other houses, each one of these houses attracts students specifically interested in its particular theme. First year students apply to live in these specific houses during June Orientation. Experience is not necessary, and there is no additional, other than what any student would normally pay to attend an off-campus event, to live in a theme house. Enthusiasm and a desire to be involved, as appropriately fits into your schedule, are mandatory requirements!
Cultural House at Muir College celebrates the rich diversity Muir students bring to the residential community. In Cultural House, students of different cultures, ethnicities, races, and sexual identities learn from each other and increase their personal awareness of diversity. Muir’s LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) and Allies Program is located in Cultural House. Residents participate in programs and activities that may include group discussions, presentations by campus resources, music and dance performances, museum visits, outdoor experiences, study breaks, movie nights, and other student events.
Wellness House is geared toward active people who are interested in exploring the areas of physical, mental, and spiritual wellness. Activities may include attending sporting events, learning time management, relaxation and meditation techniques, participating in intramurals and spiritual exploration.
Living in Wilderness House is an excellent opportunity to express the individual's relationship with the environment. Students embark on new adventures such as backpacking trips, day hikes, car/beach camping, tide pooling, and rock climbing.
Gender Inclusive Housing
Gender inclusive housing is available as a housing option for groups of continuing students. Students eligible for this program must be Muir registered students and currently living on campus. Gender inclusive housing allows continuing residents of all genders to live together in a limited number of Muir Apartments. Residency for this housing program will be available with Room Selection information in Winter and Spring Quarter.
Important Housing Info Regarding Move-In
- Room assignments will become available on the Housing Room Assignment web page by the end of August.
- Please contact your roommates as soon as possible to discuss living styles in order to avoid "Roommate Ruin".
- Please note your assigned check-in time as you will not be allowed to check in prior to that time. Your room assignment also gives you a bed assignment which you must honor out of respect for your roommates.
- Residents MUST print out their Qwik-Pass. This must be presented with your picture ID in order to check in. A substitute to check in for you is not permitted!
- All residents must check in no later than 4 pm on Tuesday before the start of classes.
