Welcome to John Muir College!
Whether you are a new freshman, new transfer student, or family member, we are looking forward to meeting you and welcoming you to John Muir College and UC San Diego. At John Muir College we provide a new student orientation program with the following goals:
• Welcome you to John Muir College and get you excited to return when the school year begins
• Address your questions about attending UC San Diego and John Muir College
• Provide you with the academic information you need in order to graduate
• Introduce you to the wealth of involvement opportunities at John Muir College
• Connect you with important campus resources to make your transition to UC San Diego successful
• Offer you an opportunity to meet other new students, College staff members, and faculty
Orientation is the beginning of your college experience! Please read the information below regarding the mandatory orientation sessions.
Freshmen
We offer 3, 2-day programs in June that allow students the opportunity to meet with an academic advisor individually to discuss courses for the Fall quarter as well as meet several College staff members and Muir students. The session dates are as follows:
Session 1: Thursday and Friday, June 20th and 21st
Session 2: Monday and Tuesday, June 24th and 25th
Session 3: Thursday and Friday, June 27th and 28th
For students who are unable to attend the June Orientation program, we offer 2 condensed 1-day programs in September prior to Welcome Week. These sessions are also ideal for those students coming from out-of-state:
Session 4: Thursday, September 19th
Session 5: Friday, September 20th
Visit the New Student Site NOW to sign up for a mandatory freshman Orientation session. Sessions fill up quickly so sign up now! Please note the deadline is Wednesday, June 5th.
Transfers
We offer one-day programs in mid-August during which students will have a chance to learn about valuable resources and involvement opportunities specific to the transfer population. We will also explain graduation requirements and teach students about the Fall course enrollment process, including how to choose classes and enroll online, which takes place at the end of August. For students unable to attend an August orientation we will offer a one-day September orientation before classes begin. There will be online tutorials about choosing classes and enrollment to assist September orientation attendees. Look for a postcard sent in mid-June with more specific instructions on how to sign up for an orientation session.
Family Members
We offer an optional Orientation program for family members of our freshman students only. Family Orientation is designed to provide support and direction to family members of freshman Muir College students. Attending the Family Orientation program will allow attendees to gain knowledge of college and campus staff, services and resources while also meeting other parents/guardians who are experiencing similar transitions within their families.
